It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr Kate Larkin as Director of Seascape Belgium and Deputy Head of the EMODnet Secretariat. Bringing her marine science expertise together with skills in project management, scientific editing, science communication and stakeholder engagement, Kate's arrival is a great addition to our diverse and qualified team.
Trained as a marine scientist, she holds a BSc in Natural Sciences and a PhD (2006) in marine science (deep-sea biogeochemistry) from the University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Sciences, U.K. She has over 10 years’ experience working in European marine science and connecting science with policy, industry and wider society.
Before joining Seascape Belgium, Kate worked at the European Marine Board Secretariat in Ostend for almost seven years, becoming Deputy Head (2015-2018) and including 5 months as Acting Head in 2017. One of her key roles was the coordination of EMB’s input to ocean observation projects and initiatives including the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS). This involved significant collaboration with the EMODnet Secretariat team in 2017-2018 for the organisation of the EOOS Conference in Brussels in November 2018 and the related Call to Action.
There is no doubt that her expertise and experience will contribute significantly to our efforts to continue to make EMODnet, the European Atlas of the Seas, and other Seascape Belgium projects a great success.
